Welcome Back to school summer camp

YMCA Recruits High School Students to lead at Middle School Madness nights.

Marcus Twine from Mulcahy YMCA at Kino Community Center came to recruit student leaders from Food, Fun and Fitness Fiesta Back to school Involvement fair.

Students will be part of a committee to help facilitate Middle School Madness nights at Mulcahy.

The committee will meet once a month to plan and recruit kids to come join in the fun at the Middle School Madness night.  Marcus also came to our Middle School SWAT camp to promote the event and invite students

YMCA Food, Fun and
Fitness Fiesta Back to school Camp

SWAT Students from 9-12th grade were all invited to participate In the Food, Fun and Fitness Fiesta Camp on August 26th and Middle school students attended Camp on August 28th.

The day was filled with education and fun!
We started our day by experiencing a "Launch your day with breakfast" event from the Team Nutrition Popular events idea booklet. High school students had a chance to customize their own breakfast promotional event. Students had wonderful creative ideas ranging from Tropical breakfast day with fruit kabobs and fruit smoothies to Ancient Greece with Hercules turkey bacon and Medusa's whole grain waffles. Middle school students experienced the event and even created a Starry sky of Healthy foods.

Students practiced using The Mobile YMCA's bike blender and created Guardian's of the Galaxy smoothies with Groot's fruit and Starlord's strawberries.
Middle School Students had the chance to get outside and learn the basics of roller blading and skate boarding from the Mobile YMCA, SWAT students will be able to assist at their school sites if they choose to incorporate these activities after school or during a Wellness Week activity

Middle school students were trained on various Standard's based curriculum to teach their peers and their community this school year including Label reading, Grocery shopping and Fuel up to play 60. Students had time to action plan for the school year, and work on how they will implement the "Plays" that their schools selected for their Fuel up to Play 60 Funding opportunity.

High School Involvement Fair:
High school students had several different opportunities to teach their peers and in the community.

Students signed up to teach youth at Elementary schools in SUSD who have received 21 st century grants and starting school gardens, as well as get involved with a new and exciting food revolution with a grant from Cornell, students will be able to participate in a sub-committee of SWAT called SNAC or Student Nutrition Advocacy committee. Students will participate in several trainings teaching them about nutrition, how to make healthy food more appealing, and food waste.

These students will be ambassadors for health and wellness at each of their school sites and in their community.
