YMCA Food, Fun and Fitness Fiesta Summer Camp
SWAT Students entering grades 9th, 10th
and 11th were all invited to participate In the Food, Fun and
Fitness Fiesta Camp.
We started the camp with a few different Leadership Learning
style inventories so the students could learn about their individual leadership
and learning styles.
Every day the students experienced new activities from the
Mobile YMCA program. The students had
the chance to learn the skills involved in slacklining, roller blading, skate
boarding and even land boarding. These
students will be available to assist afterschool at their school sites with the
equipment during afterschool programs.
Students took
part in nutrition integrated, physical activity field day stations. These
students are trained to facilitate the stations and provide nutrition education
to younger students all over the Sunnyside school district.
Students also were trained on various curriculum to teach
their peers and their community this school ye ar
including The Great Garden Detective, Label reading, My plate and Fuel up to
play 60.
The
students experienced lessons and even practiced peer to peer teaching. They learned the parts of facilitation and
how to instruct a class of youth. The students will be well rounded mentors
next year. Students will be able to teach youth at
Elementary schools in SUSD who have received 2 1 st century grants and starting
school gardens.
These students
