Sunnyside
High School Parent night Healthy Tail Gate Party:
The students
were educated on food safety and wore gloves to hand out the Ka-bobs to
families attending. The SWAT team handed out baked potato chips and water to
accompany their Ka-bobs.
Other SWAT
team members handed out educational material about green peppers and spoke to
families and parents about making healthy food choices. Families who
participated received I love veggie bracelets.

Sunnyside
SWAT team used their Fuel Up to Play 60 student wellness planners to plan out
in class activities that they can do in their classes.

district wide wellness week:

SWAT students were invited to several wellness weeks in the school district.
Sunnyside students went to Sierra Middle school to host a punt, pass, catch
activity during lunches.

SWAT attended Esperanza elementary’s Healthy walk day, Students worked with
Elementary students to walk around the school track and hosted healthy booths
with educational materials.

Desert View
HS Helps out with District wide wellness week:
Desert View
HS attended Lauffer Middle school’s Wellness week every day. Each day was
assigned a specific theme that the DVHS students help facilitate including Move
it Monday, Taste Test Tuesday, Water Wednesday etc.
Desert View
HS attended Gallego Elementary’s Healthy Field day. Students assisted in
running the stations with 5th grade students from Gallego. The
Desert View students were teaching younger SWAT students to teach other
students from their school.
Desert View
Students and their Advisors traveled to Phoenix to lead a session on their
schools health and wellness initiatives. Students spoke about activity breaks
that they have lead at their school including ZUMB-palooza and School wide
Taste tests they have hosted at school.
Every year Desert
View SWAT students plan and advertise a student driven health fair. The SWAT
students plan the booths and host the tables at the fair. Students reach out to
community partners and invite special guest like eegees, the Tucson Padres, The
U of A Nutrition Network and more.
Last year over
200 students participated in their school’s annual health fair that covers
Nutrition, physical activity and even mental health. This Year over 500
students took part in this all day health fair.
Students
lead stations about breakfast, making the healthiest choice for your last meal
and even a zombie obstacle course.
Sunnyside
High School applied and were approved for $4000 to pursue their goals of
providing healthy food demos at their school like how to make smoothies and
salsa as well as in class activity break kits for ECCAP teachers.
DVHS and
SSHS attend FUTP 60 training: Both schools attended training at the Kino YMCA.
The day included sessions on health and wellness, Fuel up to play 60 an
adventure race and a huge planning session for the entire school year.
The Wellness
Center will be a place for students to come and participate in before, during
and after school programs to assist students in achieving their goals of
reaching 60 minutes or more of physical activity every day. Students also participate in Nutrition lessons.
Our Partnership with the YMCA has helped
us provide professional instructors to help with group fitness classes like
Zumba, nutrition classes, Boot camp fitness and Cycling.
The Desert
View SWAT team gave tours of the Wellness Center, handed out information about
Wellness programs and demonstrated how to make a quick easy healthy breakfast.
The students made yogurt parfaits with granola and berries. Ms. Milky the
Nutrition Network mascot was also there (one of the SWAT students dressed up)
for pictures.
Indoor El Tour de Tucson
Sunnyside
High School and Desert View High SWAT teams participated in the Indoor Tour de
Tucson Challenge the week of November 18-21. They encouraged Students to cycle
to earn points toward various awards and to compete against students from other
schools. The stationary bikes in the high school Wellness Centers were being
utilized before, during, and after school all week.

High School: 932 riders pedaled for 26,763 minutes, 650 separate people, 67
medallions awarded.

High School and Desert View High School participated in the Indoor Tour de
Tucson Challenge the week of November 18-21. Students cycled to earn points
toward various awards and to compete against students from other schools. The
stationary bikes in the high school Wellness Centers were being utilized
before, during, and after school all week.

On
Friday, January 10th, Sunnyside students who participated in the Indoor El
Tour de Tucson Challenge were recognized during an assembly where they
received their medals. 932 riders pedaled for 26,763 minutes, 650 separate
people, 67 medallions awarded.
Desert View SWAT Hosted an Activity-Palooza for the students who participated in the Tour de Tucson
The
celebration had 1000 students participating in activities of their choosing
from the Mobile YMCA, including: angle ball a game with 2 teams that
encourages physical activity, soccer, cycling, xbox Kinect games, jumbo
nutrition jenga, slack line and land boarding.
Everyone
was up, active and participating. The entire school was helping make the
Healthy celebration a success.
Sunnyside School District Students chosen to
attend National Healthy Ambassadors summit in Washington DC

Sunnyside Freshman and 1 Desert View Sophmore were chosen to attend the 4-H
Healthy Youth Ambassador Summit in Washinton DC. The girls filled out an
application and were up against some heavy competition from students all over
the state.
The 4
day event had sessions on Physical
activity, nutrition, and metal health topics including bullying and teen
texting while driving prevention.
The
Sunnyside teens had a chance to speak to a large group of teens about what
they are doing in their schools to prevent obesity in their communities and
also learned a lot of knowledge to bring back and implement in their schools.
Zamzee Club at Sunnyside Middle school
Jen
Martinez and SWAT Teams from Sunnyside High School and Desert View High
School Teamed up with the PE teachers at the 5 Middle schools to integrate
technology into their classes, the students would come in and log on to the
Zamzee website, charge their activity monitor if needed and then we would do
a circuit training or physical activity in class. After the activity was
finished we would go back to the computers and log back on to the Zamzee
site. Students would then see the points that they earned from doing the
physical activity and earn prizes etc. The students now meet as a weekly club and
are on their 12 week of activities to earn more Zamzee points
Currently,
we have started a challenge with all
the middle school participating against each other to see who moves more.
Students compete and try to get as many moves as they can to represent their
school. This is called the Zamzee Healthy Heart Club and the final day of the
club is February 28th! The
winning school will be awarded an ACTIVITY PALOOZA by the Y Mobile Program.
SWAT
students taught lessons about whole grains, farm to table concepts and even
helped participants dig in the dirt to plant lettuce and learn about worms.
